Aquatic TherapyAquatic Therapy

Milestones is proud to offer Aquatic Therapy as a fun and innovative way to assist with reaching gross motor milestones.  In Aquatic Therapy, children work with a Physical Therapist, either one-on-one or in a group, to address goals that may be more efficiently addressed in the water.  The goals may relate to strength, coordination, balance, body awareness, motor planning and endurance.

Aquatic Therapy offers a unique environment that can assist in a child’s development.  Water reduces a child’s body weight up to 90%, therefore making it easier to perform certain movements that may be challenging on land.  Water also provides Aquatic Therapyresistance to the body and its movements, allowing strengthening to occur naturally.  And finally, Aquatic Therapy offers an environment that may be pain-reducing due to water’s natural buoyancy.

Because the water environment slows down movement, a child finds it easier to respond to changes in body position while working in the pool.  In addition, the pool provides motion and rhythm through movement which gives children important feedback that will help with the development of coordination and promote more normal movement patterns.  Exercising in the pool can also offer opportunities for peer interaction, and help to promote greater independence for children.

Aquatic Therapy is beneficial to many children, including those children who have:

  • Developmental Disorders
  • Neuromotor Impairments
  • Orthopedic Injuries
  • Musculoskeletal Impairments
  • Recent Surgery
  • Sensory Motor Impairments
  • Traumatic Injuries
