Milestones occupational therapists and speech therapists are skilled at working with children who have a variety of feeding challenges.  We incorporate the SOS (Sequential-Oral Sensory) approach to feeding as well as oral motor and sensory experiences into our sessions when working with children who have feeding challenges.  Milestones’ therapists have attended courses to learn how to use these techniques with children and their families.  Our occupational therapists and speech therapists have found these approaches to be successful techniques to address feeding concerns, particularly for children with sensory processing issues.

At Milestones, our feeding sessions are based on a sensory integration approach.  Children typically begin both group and individual sessions with activities to prepare them for snack time.  Children participate in a variety of sensorimotor activities that have an organizing effect and prepare them for the sensory and motor challenges of exploring various tastes, textures, and temperatures of foods.  Oral-motor activities are also incorporated in order to prepare the oral motor muscles for eating.  A therapy snack is designed specifically for the child to include a variety of foods that set them up for success and ease transitions to non-preferred foods.  Milestones’ therapists work closely with the families to help them learn and understand how to approach feeding with their child so that they can become successful with eating on a daily basis at home.
