What is Physical Therapy?
Physical therapy helps children gain critical skills related to independent mobility and gross motor functioning. Through the use of handling techniques, sensory stimulation, play, and parent-child interaction, physical therapy helps children accomplish goals related to range of motion, muscle strength, posture, joint mobility, gait, and higher level gross motor development.
At Milestones, our physical therapy staff utilize a multi-faceted approach that focuses on maximizing a child’s ability to move through and interact with his/her environment. In our state-of-the-art facility, children are exposed to a variety of gross motor and sensory experiences that can be customized to meet their individual needs. Our physical therapists have specialized training in Neuro-Developmental Treatment, Myofascial Release, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, joint mobilization, Theratogs™ and Kinesio Taping®. Our physical therapists provide therapy in individual and peer group settings, within our clinic, in the home, and in community environments. Our groups are designed to enhance specific skills while allowing opportunities to experience positive peer relationships in structured play situations.
Our physical therapists commonly work with children who have various diagnoses, including cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, developmental delay, muscular dystrophies, congenital abnormalities, orthopedic injuries, torticollis, cerebral vascular accident, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, spina bifida, traumatic brain injury, Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders(ASDs) and brachial plexus injury.
The following are general indicators that a child may benefit from a Physical Therapy Evaluation:

- Delays in developmental milestones
- Muscle weakness
- Postural abnormalities/ asymmetries
- Poor balance skills
